Michael Chiesa AnalystFighter on the fence Michael Chiesa: made no pick. Didn't call it.
Explicitly declines to pick: "This fight just got made today... since I haven't done any research on Johnny Vasquez [Gianni Vazquez], it would be a disservice to you guys to even pick on this fight. So, I'm going to brush that one to the wayside." Notes his earlier pick of Miles Johns was for the since-replaced opponent (Rosas), not Vazquez.

Career stats per UFC.com; recent form is each fighter's last five bouts. Numbers reflect records coming into fight night. Bars compare each stat on a fixed scale; the “Edge” marker flags the leading corner where the gap is meaningful. The snapshot plots five career rates — output, striking defense, durability (strikes absorbed, inverted), takedown defense and finish rate — each normalised on its own scale.
Pre-fight analysis — how we saw it going in
Case for Johns
Johns carries the deeper UFC resume and the more balanced output — 3.36 significant strikes landed per minute at 45% accuracy, with 78% takedown defence that has kept him upright against grapplers. He has lost three straight, submitted by Daniel Marcos and out-pointed by Jean Matsumoto and Felipe Lima, and this featherweight bout is his first fight above bantamweight, where he built his 15-5 record. If the added weight lets him sit down on his shots longer, the resume edge should show; if it does not, the skid extends to four.
Case for Vazquez
Vazquez is 14-5-1 with five knockouts and three submissions among his wins, but his entire UFC sample is one fight — a unanimous-decision loss to Javid Basharat on short notice this February. In that fight he landed 1.60 significant strikes per minute against 3.93 absorbed and attempted no takedowns of his own, numbers that could reflect the opponent as much as the fighter. A cleaner performance here would say more about what Vazquez is inside the Octagon than his debut could.
What We Were Watching For
- Whether Johns's move up to featherweight, after building his 15-5 record entirely at bantamweight, changes the trajectory of a three-fight losing streak.
- Johns's 3.36 significant strikes landed per minute at 45% accuracy against Vazquez's 39% striking defence.
- Vazquez's 1.60-per-minute UFC output and zero takedown attempts, both drawn from a single fight, against a far more UFC-tested Johns sample.
- Whether Johns's 78% takedown defence holds up if Vazquez brings a different game plan than his debut.
