What happened
The result, the defining moments, and what the verdict means.
Ribovics turned the lightweight bout into exactly the fight Barboza did not want. Cageside Press reports both men swinging heavily early, with Ribovics landing repeatedly, opening a cut and pressing forward in close quarters where Barboza could not deploy the kicks that built his reputation. Ribovics worked knees up the middle and looping hooks; Barboza answered with body kicks and a spinning back kick, but was rocked by the end of the round and had to hold on to stay upright.
Barboza went back to his corner with a split shin that bled heavily and damage around the eye, and chose to continue. In the second he was hemmed against the fence and retreated under body shots, elbows and punches until referee Herb Dean stepped in at 1:32.
Barboza laid down his gloves in the cage afterwards, signalling his retirement, and told Joe Rogan: “Every single fight I promise, I did my best. Thank you, thank you so much.”

Pre-fight analysis — how we saw it going in
Case for Barboza
Barboza needs to make Ribovics respect the outside weapons early, then use timing to stop the fight becoming a pure pocket sprint.
Case for Ribovics
Ribovics's route is to pressure without walking into Barboza's counters and force the veteran to defend in combination.
What We Were Watching For
- Barboza's kicking range against Ribovics's attempts to close the pocket.
- Whether Ribovics can pressure without giving up a clean counter window.
- The effect of Barboza's experience if the fight reaches the later rounds.
- Which fighter gets the first damaging sequence in the center of the cage.

Career stats per UFC.com; recent form is each fighter's last five bouts. Numbers reflect the fighter data snapshot used for this page. Bars compare each stat on a fixed scale; the “Edge” marker flags the leading corner where the gap is meaningful. The snapshot plots five career rates — output, striking defense, durability (strikes absorbed, inverted), takedown defense and finish rate — each normalised on its own scale.
